I refer to the letter ‘Train wagons’ by Mary Attard (April 12).
On July 12, 1999, the Times of Malta had carried an article titled ‘Transport museum promoters urge restorationof abandoned tram’ together with a picture of sectionsof a tram used as a makeshift store in St Thomas Bay. Iwent to St Thomas Bay and spoke to a person who used to live there.
Through this newspaper we have learnt about such tram relics. I tried to save the relics found at St Thomas Bay but it seemed my efforts to set up a transport museum were useless and my appeals fell on deaf ears.
Luckily, in Birkirkara they have done their very best to save a train wagon. I had managed to get hold of some railings and presented them to the Birkirkara local council a few years ago. They can be seen at the train station garden. I also handed over to the present mayor a lampshade that was used in the station.
One must struggle to restore and bring such artefacts to the attention of the public and this should be done through the Malta Transport Museum. Anybody wishing to help promote this idea can contact me at PO Box 16, Msida. I feel the proposed Malta Transport Museum should be situated in the Cottonera area, ideally close to the sports centre. Everyone can help to turn this idea into reality.
Let us preserve our motoring, train and tram relics.
