It was a pleasant surprise to read David Hogg’s letter from Bristol (‘Brexit is the UK’s worst decision’ (The Sunday Times of Malta, April 9). The letter was graphically and appropriately displayed.

It was heartening to hear from a Remainer, as so many have been bullied into silence with accusations of treason by hardline Brexiteers and their populist supporters, who brook no opinions other than their own.

It was also a pleasure to hear him recall the inspirational words of Guido de Marco about the young people from countries that were once enemies working and playing together in peace and friendship.

Millions of people died in the two world wars, and whole generations of young people were lost. Since The Treaty of Rome, the European Union has brought about six decades (shall we say six generations?) of peace and prosperity.

Our own country is a shining example of the beneficial effect of being a member of the EU. Ironically, the UK also benefited greatly, albeit reluctantly. Post-imperial nostalgia, xenophobia and sheer misinformation resulted in the vote to leave – a heartbreaking outcome, and yes, a great mistake.

Mr Hogg says that everyone thinks that Brexit is a done deal – but also opines that it is not. I agree. Scotland and Northern Ireland will have their say, as will Gibraltar, but, equally importantly, so will the 48 per cent of voters who wished to remain and, one imagines, many of the leavers when they realise they have been misled and are being led to a disastrous outcome.

I suspect that well before the election, which may or may not take place in 2020, there will be a huge reversal of public opinion, when the impossibility of a good outcome for Brexit becomes apparent. If sadly the fanatics were to get their way, then ‘Woe Britannia’, and we will weep for what was and what might have been.
