A scheme has been launched that offers an incentive for University students to use public transport to travel to the Msida campus instead of using their car.
To benefit from the scheme, called the KSU Transport Fund, students have to ask for their University Student Council (KSU) parking permit to be revoked for three months and/or agree not to apply for one for three months.
In return, such students will benefit from a 50 per cent reduction on the cost of using public transport, and the maximum they can be charged on their tallinja card is €21 in a month. Malta Public Transport will top up the students’ tallinja card with €10.50 every month for three months. The subsidy is drawn from a €10,000 KSU Transport Fund and deductions from it will be carried out on a first-come, first-served basis.
The KSU said it was seeking to mitigate the current parking problem on campus through initiatives such as the revamped carpooling system and a soon-to-be-launched Two Wheel Fund, adding that through such incentives, it hoped that a change in mentality will occur.
Students who want to provide feedback or concerns on any particular routes may pass them on through the application itself or via e-mail vicepresident@ksu.org.mt.
