Year 6 students from the Rabat primary school recently took part in the first educational visit to St Andrew’s Electricity Distribution Centre in Pembroke to learn about how electrical energy flows from power stations to homes and about careers in this sector.

The students were welcomed by members of the company management, led by executive chairman Fredrick Azzopardi. Following an introductory presentation and a safety briefing, the children walked along a visitors’ safety route to learn about the 33kV electricity distribution centre’s high-voltage cables, transformers, switchgear and other equipment.

They also visited one of the underground tunnels containing the high-voltage cables that connect the country’s power stations to all its distribution centres.

At the end of the visit two of the company’s engineers spoke about the numerous science and engineering careers available in the energy sector.

St Andrew’s Electricity Distribution Centre is one of six new major electricity network nodes being developed by Enemalta plc as part of a €80 million project to improve the quality of electricity services across the Maltese islands.

The centre is open to visits by students aged 10 and over.
