Simon Busuttil publicly declared on more than one occasion that the PN “is ready to go and defend its case in front of the [Electoral] Commission and anybody else, since the PN had nothing to hide”.

Busuttil reversed all this on April 6 by saying that the PN should not be investigated by the commission because, according to him, the majority of the members were nominated by the Prime Minister.

Actually, both the PN and the PL have four members each plus an independent chairman nominated by the Prime Minister after consultation with the leader of the Opposition and about whom the PN had never objected. But Busuttil and his party have never in the past objected to the commission not only being responsible for the holding of all elections and referenda held in our country for decades but also investigating and deciding each complaint raised by political parties since  it is empowered to do so by the Constitution itself.

Also, Busuttil and the Opposition had voted in favour of this law in Parliament and had never raised the argument that the commission cannot be impartial

It is glaringly obvious that Busuttil and the PN intend to do everything possible to try and stop this investigation so that the Maltese people will not know what really happened before the next general election.

I believe the PN will try to take the case to the Constitutional Court and, possibly, also some European Court if it does not get what it would like to achieve in the local courts.

If Busuttil had truly nothing to hide he should have welcomed the investigation and not try to stop it in its tracks.

Who was it who has been promising “good governance”, “honest politics”, “transparency” and “a coalition against corruption”?
