MasterChef viewers were unsure about getting their teeth into one contestant's dish when she served up ballotine of crocodile.

Amateur chef Lyndsay was taking part in a challenge that called for a snappy dish to be prepared in a short time frame for a panel of previous contestants to judge in Thursday's episode of the BBC1 show.

She chose to cook a ballotine of crocodile, but her unusual dish surprised viewers despite winning positive reviews from the critics.

One tweeted: "OMG there's a DJ on Masterchef making a crocodile ballotine", and another added: "Someone just cooked crocodile on #masterchef. Bravo for creativity!"

Those watching the episode joked about the choice of meat.

One viewer tweeted: "Picking up tips for my next crocodile dish."

Another wrote: "Crocodile mince easy to get than crocodile. Hmm I'll look in Tesco tomorrow."

Notting Hill actress Lorelei King was straightforward in her objection to the dish.

She tweeted: "Try giving me a ballotine of crocodile and I will nut you."

Others were concerned about the use of such an unusual ingredient and its environmental impact.

One viewer tweeted: "If they'd served elephant people would be outraged.. but crocodile is okay??.. WTF!!?? No longer a masterchef viewer!!!!!!!!!!"

Someone else tweeted: "Last week it was Yellowfin Tuna, this week it's Crocodile. #MasterChef what are you doing?!?!?"

However, there was an obvious joke to be made.

A viewer tweeted: "Ballotine of crocodile and make it snappy", as one of the judges made the same quip.

Lyndsay progressed to the quarter final which will air on BBC1 at 8.30pm on Friday.
