Russia has dropped out from next month's Eurovision Song Contest after host country Ukraine banned entry to the Russian participant.

Channel One, the official Russian broadcaster, said the decision was taken after negotiations between the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and the Ukrainian Security Services failed.

Ukraine banned entry for Russian singer Julia Samoylova because she had performed in Crimea back in 2015, breaching Ukrainian law in the process.

Russia took over and annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014.

Russia turned down offers for Samoylova to perform by satellite, or for a song by a different singer to be submitted.
