Do we really want to attract tourists from the EU in droves and make them feel at home?

Last week I took an EU octogenarian lady and her daughter to Gozo, a mother and daughter who fell in love with the Maltese islands well over five decades ago.

On our return to Malta, on the Gozo ferry I asked the booking clerk what was I obliged to pay for three senior citizens and one standard fare. The booking clerk looked at us passengers in the car and advised me that the EU lady was not entitled to a free passage back to Malta.

I would have expected that any elderly person hailing from the EU was automatically entitled to a free Gozo trip, but it is definitely not the case. She also insisted on seeing my ID card not being convinced of my weathered looks and white hair that I too was an octogenarian.

Should not each and every member of the EU be allowed free access?
