Drivers caught at speeds of up to 66km/h will benefit from the agreement reached between the local council and Local Enforcement System Agency, Dr Aquilina announced in a Facebook post.

Pending fines will be cancelled and those already paid will be refunded, with LESA also agreeing to introducing a 10 per cent tolerance mechanism to the Siġġiewi speed camera, intended to compensate for speedometer variances. The mechanism came into force at 5pm yesterday, the mayor said.

The changes came following talks between Dr Aquilina and LESA, after motorists complained that they were receiving fines for overspeeding by as little as 1.5km/h in the 60km/h zone.

In his Facebook post, Dr Aquilina thanked LESA for their continued cooperation and urged motorists to drive carefully and respect traffic laws.
