With reference to the letter by Henry-Franz Gauci (April 5) the University of Malta would like to point out that the minimum entry requirements for regular admission to University of Malta courses define a benchmark for successful general education. They are far from being ‘surplus’ or a ‘relic’ of the past.

The ‘core’ subjects equip students with basic competences in mathematics, Maltese and English, which are essential to pursue an education at a higher level and adequately prepare students for the challenges of the work environment.

The University of Malta reiterates that the change in admission regulations announced recently is intended only for applicants falling within the Autism Spectrum and other recognised specific learning difficulties.

Given the particular nature of such cases, the University will be considering each application on its own merits. While facilitating admission, the new regulation also ensures that applicants claiming exemption due to their disability will not be adversely and critically affected in their studies.

The University strives to be an all-inclusive organisation and it is with this intention that the change in admission regulations was introduced.
