American space agency NASA is celebrating this year's Earth Day by offering people the chance to adopt a part of the planet.

The April 22 celebrations are held all around the world to show support for environmental protection and NASA hopes to have each of the 64,000 sections of the planet it has marked adopted by that date, according to CNN.

Each piece is approximately 55 miles wide and randomly selected. In the same way one names a star, partakers will not hold any legal or property rights in relation to their assigned section. All pieces hold equal importance, whether positioned in the middle of the sea or on the ground which holds the houses of parliament.

Individualised scientific data will be given by NASA alongside each specific section, along with a certificate.

By Earth Day on April 22, NASA aims to have every available section adopted. Once all pieces have been taken, they will be reassigned in order to allow as many people as possible to partake.
