One cannot refer to the European People’s Parties congress in Malta without giving prominence to the political stature of Simon Busuttil. The event speaks for itself in this regard.

The number of Maltese people who are taking politics seriously is steadily increasing. If not – as David Thake wrote recently – we pave the way for politicians to take us for a ride as has been experienced over the last four years, unfortunately. Therefore, more people are becoming determined to contribute towards bringing about of a brighter future within the largest group of European People’s Parties in Europe.

The EPP, referred to as the flagship of Europe, simply made us proud to be Maltese. Unity in diversity should continue to be its inspiration with a coherent vision to regain citizens’ confidence in this European Project. Most of the distinguished speakers touched on Europe’s Christian roots and values. Let us be proud of our values.

As Antonio Tajani stated: “We are Christians. It is our history. It is impossible to win without our values but united in our values we win and do away with the ghost of populism.”

The Maltese people have been provided with a golden opportunity to reflect on what it means to vote for a future prime minister whose vocation is not about photographs but about the needs of the people within an improved quality of life. This is the substantial dignified reality they deserve.
