The infamous story behind the legend of Sweeney Todd – The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is being staged as a musical, combining comedy with horror, as pies and murder, the two perennials of London life in the Victorian era, become the serial killer and barber’s bread and butter.

The plot centres around Benjamin Barker, who after being unjustly judged, becomes a monster who turns his victims into a bake.

The school edition of the musical is being staged in Malta for the first time by Stagecoach Performing Arts School.

The 30-strong cast is directed by Stephen Oliver. The musical director is Cathy Lawler, the choreographer is Lee McCallion while Edward Mercieca is the producer.

The musical interpretation is based on the Tony Award-winning version written by Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler.

Matthew Ben Attard portrays the part of Sweeney Todd, Raquel Theuma is Mrs Lovett, while Alex Weenink portrays Judge Turpin. Set and costume design, as well as marketing, were all handled by the students.

Sweeney Todd – The Demon Barber of Fleet Street School Edition shows tomorrow at 7pm at the Salesians Theatre, Sliema. Tickets are available online. For more information, call 7944 5030.
