The Mdina Cathedral APS Contemporary Art Biennale returns once again this year under the artistic direction of Giuseppe Schembri Bonaci. This event will discuss the spiritual crisis currently taking over the Mediterranean.

The theme that will be challenged and interpreted with new and innovative works of art from several renowed Maltese and international artists is ‘The Mediterranean: A Sea of Conflicting Spiritualities’.

The artists will be asked to create works that will not only challenge the norm but the political scenario that is currently engulfing this region.

Being at the centre of the Mediterranean, Malta has played a significant role as an island that has experienced many conflicts. This makes it the ideal hub for artistic discussion and the contemporary political condition outlines the need for the arts to respond to an era of crisis and destruction.

The event will once again be held in Mdina, the home of diverse occupancies and a colourful past full of varying religions and numerous cultural influences.

Life will be given to contemporary art in the Silent City which in turn boasts a turbulent yet strong past.

Dr Schembri Bonaci will be inviting artists to participate. Each artist will have a specific space within the Cathedral Museum in Mdina, in which he/she will install their project depending on the theme and its nature.

The biennale will be held between November 13, 2017 and  January 7, 2018. APS Bank is the main sponsor for this event.  To keep updated with what will be happening, follow the Facebook link: https://www.facebook.com/The-Mdina-Cathedral-APS-Contemporary-Art-Biennale-2017-596762203737292/ or follow updates on the new website https://www.mdinabiennale.com/ .
