The Home Affairs Ministry issued a direct order worth €880,000 excluding VAT last December for the upgrading and installation of a new IT network at prison.

Minister Carmelo Abela acknowledged the direct order in parliament this evening, answering a question by Nationalist Party MP Jason Azzopardi. Mr Abela said that the IT network at the centre where young inmates are housed will also be improved, to ensure better surveillance.

The same unnamed company was also awarded another direct order amounting to €35,600 to provide interrogation recording equipment in eight police stations.
