A landslide in Colombia's southwestern border province of Putumayo sent mud and debris crashing onto houses overnight, killing 154 people and injuring many more.  

Heavy rains causing several rivers to overflow, setting off a mudslide that crashed into homes and clogged up roads.

Rescue attempts - aided by more than 1,100 soldiers- were hampered by waist-high water and the destruction of two bridges.

The nation's president has declaring a state of emergency.
