What a pity that the Sylvanus column is being stopped. It is the first thing I read every Sunday as soon as I buy The Sunday Times of Malta.

Over the last 30 years, its very clever satire on topical, newsworthy items has been unsurpassed by any other columnist. It has indeed touched several chords with me over the years.

Only last Wednesday, I was stopped by a traffic warden of the ilk exposed in his very final column. I, and others like me, were inexplicably fined for the horrendous crime of daring to drive over a short, continuous, single white line, which changed into a dashed line as we drove. There was absolutely no danger to anyone, but it brought in a flood of fines to a line of unsuspecting stupefied criminals.

And ironically, only the day before we had been assured on TV with trumpet blasts that wardens will henceforth issue warnings instead of fines! Yeah, right! Thank you Sylvanus for your pen: it is a crying shame that you will not brighten up my Sunday any longer.
