Activists from Kamp Emerġenza Ambjent this morning called on the government to step in and ensure the public is not “short-changed” following the unveiling of the Manoel Island masterplan.

Addressing a crowd of some 50 people that gathered with placards outside Fort Manoel, Kamp Emerġenza Ambjent president Andre Callus called on the authorities to scrutinise MIDI’s contract signed 17 years ago to identify which obligations have not been met.

"It is within the government's powers to take action and stop this development, especially if it is ascertained that MIDI has been in breach of the signed contract.

“The contract included timeframes for the start and completion of works and penalties for non-adherence to these time-frames,” Mr Callus said, adding that it is evident that many of the plans in the contract have evidently not been carried out.

The activists also criticised the plan to build a hotel in the fort, insisting that this would close off the area to be enjoyed by the few.

Gżira mayor Conrad Borg Manché also called for the scrutiny of the masterplan, saying the area should be enjoyed by all, especially since there is very little space for recreational activities in the locality.

Mr Borg Borg Manché said that while Manoel Island is now open to the public every day, the battle to safeguard the area was not over, urging those present to continue supporting those fighting for this to happen.
