A man was remanded in custody today for breaching 'almost all' bail conditions imposed by a magistrate's court in December 2014.

Jason Micallef, 22, from Cospicua ended up in court when he was accused of assaulting a policeman, escaping police custody and driving a car without a licence and insurance.

The court heard that Mr Micallef had been failing to regularly sign the bail book at Sliema police station and he had actually moved house from Gzira to Cospicua, without informing the police.

On March 17, Mr Micallef failed to show up in court for a hearing and had asked his mother to inform the magistrate that he was unable to attend because he was unwell. Yet, later that same day, he had gone to sign the bail book.

Inspector Jonathan Ransley explained how on March 22 at around 4.30pm he had summoned Mr Micallef to Sliema police station and, acting upon a suspicion that the man had arrived there by car when he had no driving licence, sent an officer to check out his suspicion.

Mr Micallef pushed aside the officer and fled the scene only to be arrested later and taken to court.  

The court denied bail on account of the gravity of the charges as well as in view of the man's lack of trustworthiness.
