I am a relative newcomer to this country but I find it hard to believe that, given a choice between making Manoel Island a shopping and gambling resort for wealthy visitors and turning it into a public park for the use of this and future generations of Maltese, the people of Malta would prefer the first option.

How about a referendum on the future of Manoel Island to test the government’s determination to build over more and more open space?

Recently, we were able to enjoy wonderful walks on Manoel Island, and the stunning views of Valletta and even the less stunning views of despoiled Sliema have been life-enhancing. But this was only made possible by the direct intervention of courageous activists.

If there is a serious risk that Manoel Island will be closed off and despoiled as well and if the government refuses to give the people a voice, are there enough people ready to take to the barricades to keep the builders out until 2023? If there are, I think their children and grandchildren will be forever grateful.
