One-metre-long remotely-controlled sailing yachts are the most common type of radio-controlled sailing among hobbyists around the world.

With the backdrop of Mellieħa Bay, several local and international skippers are this week racing their remote-controlled sailboats to the finish line.

The event is attracting 44 participants from all over Europe, mostly from the UK. Other countries include the Netherlands, Norway, Germany, Italy and Sweden.

Malta will be represented by 10 skippers who will race their mini remote-controlled yachts.

■ The Malta Model Boat Association (MMBA) Open National Championship is being held at the Mellieħa Bay Hotel between today and Sunday. The eventis sponsored by Thomas Smith Group and Bank of Valletta.
