Brexit is a precipitous political move that might topple Great Britain to Britain. The British Isles had been sliding down since the mighty days of the British Empire.

Malta, with its Grand Harbour, the excellent drydocks and naval base of the Mediterranean fleet, had proved to be a well-oiled clog in the domination of the British Empire.

Like so many other colonies, Malta had been Anglicised. Together with Cyprus and other far-flung countries and islands, Malta was forced to escape from the controlling doctrine of colonialism.

Hence, the gradual dissolution of the empire was inevitable. Its isolated pride found shelter in the British Commonwealth. That is a mere shadow of its transient glory. However, the European Union was an opportunity for Britain to take its place among the great of the 28 nations. The power of domination was shared among others, like Germany and France.

The exalted pinnacle of place and fame was too competitive and claustrophobic. The ingrained British characteristics of traditional pride, habitual greatness, overpowering domination and absolute control had changed and deteriorated.

Great Britain lost its lustre. It rose no more than Britain without being Great. Brexit is an experimental attempt for Britain to climb to the heights of past glory. However, its commitment has already proved divisive and fragmented. Britain’s new isolation in a modern competitive world is no longer an empire builder.

Figuratively speaking, the struggle for playing the game and winning the championship is rough and tough. Perhaps Britain will come out unscathed but its injuries will take a long time to heal.
