Malta Baseball and Softball Association director of umpires Adrian Casha and technical director Giancarlo Pulvirenti recently represented the country at the 13th Umpire Convention hosted by the Comitato Nazionale Arbitri (CNA), under the auspices of the Federazione Italiana Baseball Softball (FIBS), in Parma.

The seminar for baseball and softball ran simultaneously and were well attended by 220 umpires at the Hotel Parma e Congressi ahead of the new season. Representatives from the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) and the European Softball Federation (ESF) were also in attendance to support this annual event and provide the latest interpretations of the rules.

Baseball instructors from Canada, Czech Republic, Holland, Italy and USA covered various key aspects of the sport, such as the slide rule interpretation, mechanics, the philosophy of balk, mental preparation and dissent.

The development of umpires, application of the laws and teamwork were top of the agenda in the softball sessions.

During their stay in Parma, Casha and Pulvirenti conducted fruitful talks with high-rank officials from the FIBS, WBSC and ESF as they seek to provide Maltese umpires with more opportunities to enhance their knowledge and to officiate in international competitions.
