The philharmonic society L-Unjoni of Luqa is performing in a sacred music concert entitled Tristis Est Anima Mea on Saturday. This concert will see the pariticipation of the L-Unjoni band, the Coro Bel Canto and various soloists. The symphonic band will be complemented by other instruments such as the harp and the church organ.

The programme includes music by various Maltese composers, such as Joseph Abela Scolaro, Giuseppe Camilleri, Gaetano Grech and Charles Zammit. There will also be the premiere of three works composed by John David Zammit, Norbert Camilleri and Neil Zammit, all members of the L-Unjoni band.

As regards foreign pieces, the band will play excerpts from various important works of a sacred nature such as Le Sette Ultime Parole di Cristo by Saverio Mercadante, La Passione di Cristo by Lorenzo Perosi and Stabat Mater by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, among others. The concert will include other works from  religious-themed films composed by Milkos Rozsa and Elmer Bernstein.

John David Zammit is conducting the concert.

■ The concert will be held at Luqa parish church on Saturday at 7.30pm. Attendees are kindly requested to be seated at 7.15pm. Entrance is free. This activity is being held with the support of the Creative Communities Fund of Arts Council Malta.
