A dog owner whose fierce pets terrorised Gżira residents was today handed a suspended prison sentence after pleading guilty to a series of charges related to his pets.

David Farrugia, 54 and from Gżira allowed his dogs to roam loose despite knowing they were dangerous, threatened, insulted and caused injuries to a passing woman and instigated his dogs to attack the police while failing to obey their orders.

The court forbade Mr Farrugia from having any dogs in his home in the future, though it allowed him to keep a cat or bird as a pet.

Mr Farrugia did not seem all too interested in having further pets, replying "Better nothing. I'm fed up of all this trouble."

The court ordered Animal Welfare authorities to take the dogs away and find them alternative homes.

Lawyers Giannella DeMarco and Gianluca Caruana Curran were defence counsel.
