Gymnastics: Ellie Downie (picture) claimed the women’s all-around title at the British Gymnastics Championships at a sold-out Echo Arena in Liverpool on Saturday night. The 17-year-old eclipsed team-mates Claudia Fragapane and Amy Tinkler to take the crown for the first time with a string of confident performances. Downie, who was part of the hugely successful Great Britain team at last year’s Rio Olympics, scored 55.350 ahead of Alice Kinsella and Maisie Methuen.

Golf: World number one Dustin Johnson stayed on track to become the first player to win all four World Golf Championships events when he advanced to the semi-finals at the WGC-Dell Match Play in Texas. Johnson lost three consecutive holes during his quarter-final against Alexander Noren, but had enough in reserve to secure a 3&2 victory over the Swedish eighth seed at Austin Country Club.Next up for the American top seed is a semi-final against Japanese 54th seed Hideto Tanihara, while Spaniard 21st seed Jon Rahm and American 42nd seed Bill Haas meet in the other semi.

Rugby League: England international Gareth Widdop walked unscathed from a crash in which his car was written off to lead his club to victory in their latest NRL match. St George Illawarra coach Paul McGregory watched his captain kick five goals from five attempts in a 26-12 win over New Zealand Warriors and then revealed news of the car crash in the post-match media conference. “He had a car accident on the way to the game so he’s done a really good job,” McGregor said. “The car is written off. To put that aside and perform like that is a credit to him.”

Boxing: Anthony Crolla acknowledged he was beaten by the better man as Jorge Linares put on a classy performance to retain the WBA lightweight title at the Manchester Arena. The Mancunian was bidding to win back the crown he lost to Linares at the same venue six months ago, but was totally outclassed on Saturday night. Linares walked away with another unanimous points decision although victory was more conclusive this time, with all three judges scoring the contest 118-109 in his favour.

Basketball: Cleveland Cavaliers’ lead over Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference slipped to half-a-game after they fell to a 127-115 defeat to the Washington Wizards. John Wall led the way 37 points as the Wizards gained revenge for an overtime defeat to Cleveland last month. Bradley Beal added 27 points and the Wizards showed they could be a tricky opponent in a potential play-off match-up. LeBron James had 24 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists for the Cavaliers, with Kyrie Irving adding 23.
