Gareth Sciberras will bid farewell to international football tomorrow night when Malta take on Slovakia in a World Cup Group F qualifier at the National Stadium (kick-off: 8.45pm).

The Birkirkara midfielder announced in a press conference that he had informed his club and national coach Pietro Ghedin that he will hang up his boots when the 2016-17 season comes to an end next month.

“I have discussed this matter with my family for several weeks and I feel that the time is right for me to move on and dedicate more time to my family and my professional career.

“There is no doubt that tomorrow’s match against Slovakia will surely bring in a lot of emotions but I’m looking forward to represent the country one last time and I hope that I can end my international career on a positive note.”

On his part, national coach Pietro Ghedin has vowed that his players will give their 100 per cent as they look to achieve a positive result against the Euro 2016 finalists.

“This week I had the opportunity to work with the Malta ‘B’ players and I was pleased with their attitude and hunger and that was mirrored in the decision to promote Cain Attard to the national squad.

“I’m always under pressure to win matches and tomorrow we will try to do our best to get a positive result,” Ghedin said.
