Another self-inflicted tragedy of innocent people occurred in Europe, this time in London. Unfortunately, similar tragedies are bound to happen if western countries’ diplomacy does not go through a radical change and learn from the recent and continuous blunders committed by the US and most of the European allies in various Arab countries.

The Iraqi report published by the British government, which destroyed Tony Blair’s political biography once and for all, concluded that “there was no imminent threat from Saddam Hussein, the strategy of containment could have been adopted and continued for some time, the judgements about the severity of the threat posed by Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction – WMDs – were presented with a certainty that was not justified and that the widespread perception that the September 2002 dossier distorted intelligence produced a ‘damaging legacy’, undermining trust and confidence in politicians”.

This report should be the starting point of any honest discussion on the wisdom or otherwise of recent western foreign policy. If the West will only stop at condemning the atrocious London attack and not indulge in an honest sort of examination of conscience the loss of lives in this and past incidents will be in vain.

European citizens are not happy with the sort of diplomacy practised by their governments. It is good to remember that on the eve of Blair’s decision to support former US president George W. Bush’s disastrous decision to go to war, two million peace-loving Europeans took to the streets appealing “not to go to war”. Unfortunately, they were ignored and the result is the insecurity that engulfed all European states.
