The Carmelite Friars in Mdina, in collaboration with the Faculty of Theology, and the Maltese, Arabic and Libraries’ departments, will be organising a public talk on a particular version of ‘Hail, Holy Queen’, tomorrow.

The friars discovered an interesting manuscript volume, entitled ‘Instruzione de’ Capellani e specialmente de Geroslimitani’ in the priory’s archives. The volume revealed surprising details, the most important of which is an archaic version of the popular Catholic Marian prayer. The transcribed version has interesting grammatical details and sheds new light on the locals’ spoken idiom in the 17th and 18th centuries.

The prayer, together with an analysis was published in the latest edition of Arkivju 7 (2016).

The speakers at the talk will be Manwel Mifsud, Martin Zammit, Olvin Vella and William Zammit.

■ The public talk is being held at the Mdina Carmelite church tomorrow at 7.30pm.
