The association of former members of parliament MPs' financial statements should be sent to an ombudsman for auditing and should only be tabled if the auditing ombudsman finds discrepancies.

It also proposed that all MPs should be on a full-time basis and each one should, therefore, be financially independent.

In a statement issued today, the association said medical specialists and doctors should be allowed to do voluntary work at government hospitals so as not to lose their practice.

The association also called for staff and offices as support to MPs and also proposed that no minister should work in areas he was responsible for, for a period of five years after leaving office.

Election candidates should be lectured on the Constitution and the role of parliament, before the general elections.

They should be lectured on parliamentary practice and procedures immediately after being elected and before taking their seats.

The association also could for tougher action by the Speaker against uncivil language in the chamber.
