Following Ivan Camilleri’s article ‘Plans for Dom Mintoff monument modified’ (March 13) I feel bound to clarify a point regarding the comment “artist Noel Galea Bason was given another direct order…”.

I was approached to create a figurative sculpture to celebrate Dom Mintoff, after a third call for submissions by Heritage Malta failed to yield asuitable work. This is the first time I’ve ever had a commission from Heritage Malta.

I wanted to say this because some time ago I wasreproached by someone seriously involved in the lame Fjamma project, clearly very peeved at his failure to push the monstrous, soulless andartless creation as a fitting memorial to the late prime minister. Recycling it into a strained homage to the Maltese people was a senseless and costlyidea to upstage the figurative project.
