A theatrical performance aimed at children aged over eight is being staged at the Manoel Theatre this week.

Mo’s Art follows a young artist named Mo who has an ‘artist’s block’ and cannot think of anything to paint. He is whisked away to the world of opera, where a number of loveable and quirky characters help him explore the genre of classical music and opera through a number of different experiences. Creativity starts to flow and beautiful music comes to life.

Directed by Antonella Mifsud, and musically coached by Karmena Radovska, along with Ramona Zammit Formosa at the piano, the nine-strong cast have been working for the past four months on rehearsals for Mo’s Art, a piece devised by the director herself.

The performance forms part of Toi Toi’s educational programme, which considers opera as an important and relevant art form even today.

Opera was the pop music of the past and can still be enjoyed today. People of all ages and social classes would clamour to fill the theatre in order to enjoy a night out at the opera.

Many of the popular arias being sung in this production were in fact sung in the streets and many of them remain popular even to this day.

■ Mo’s Art is taking place at the Manoel’s Studio Theatre today, tomorrow and on Friday for schools at 10am and 11.15am and on Sunday for the public at 11am and 12.15pm.
