There are no Maltese victims in the terror attack which took place in London this afternoon, Foreign Affairs Minister George Vella told Parliament this evening.

The House was expressing solidarity with the UK government and the families of the dead and injured in the attack.

At least two people died after a knifeman mowed down pedestrians then stabbed a policeman before he was shot by armed officers.

It appeared the incident may have unfolded in several locations, including on the nearby Westminster bridge where eyewitnesses said a car had crashed into pedestrians.

Speaker Anġlu Farrugia said he was informed of the attack by the Commonwealth secretary a few minutes after it happened.

Foreign Minister Goerge Vella expressed surprise that the attack happened in the heart of London. A few minutes before he came to the House, he said, the Maltese High Commissioner in London informed him there were no Maltese victims so far.

Opposition Leader Simon Busuttil expressed shock, sorrow and solidarity with the British people and the victims’ families. He said no country, whatever its size, was immune to such attacks and underlined the need for EU member states to get together to fight terrorism.

The Speaker ordered the Clerk of the House to write to the Commonwealth Secretariat and the British government expressing Parliament’s sentiments.
