Customs officers discovered a parcel full of cash during inspections at the parcel post office.

They were screening parcels arriving from China, one of which was declared to be containing a home and garden item.

The item's shape raised suspicions and was set aside to be screened by x-ray. Following the screening, the item was opened and the cash was found.

The Customs Department said there were five bundles of $100 cash notes.

Each bundle contained $10,000, for a total amount of $50,000.

The Police Economic Crime Section will establish if the cash is genuine or counterfeit. The receiver of the packet has been arraigned.

Last week Customs inspectors discovered over 300kg of cocaine while inspecting a container supposedly containing cans of pineapple at Malta Freeport. The haul was the biggest ever by the Customs Department.
