Cricket: Resolute rearguard action by Peter Handscomb and Shaun Marsh helped Australia escape with a remarkable draw against India on the final day of the third test yesterday. Having conceded a 152-run first innings lead, the tourists were reeling when skipper Steve Smith departed, leaving his team at 63-4 with more than two sessions to go. But Handscomb and Marsh battled on through the entire second session to first erase the deficit and then ensure Australia were safe by the time they were separated.

Golf: The club scheduled to hold the 2020 Tokyo Olympics golf events voted to admit women as full members yesterday, scrapping an all-male policy that had been heavily criticised and put its hosting rights in jeopardy. The private Kasumigaseki Country Club took the decision to change its bylaws at an extraordinary board meeting after being told last month that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) would find another venue if the policy remained unaltered.

Rugby Union: Three members of England’s title-winning team have been named on the shortlist for this season’s Six Nations player of the championship. Centre Owen Farrell, lock Joe Launchbury and flanker Maro Itoje have made the 12-strong group. Players in every Six Nations match were awarded or deducted points based upon several different performance categories, with  coach Nick Mallett also involved in drawing up the shortlist.
