Updated at 8.30pm with PL statement

The independent commission set up by the Nationalist Party to propose changes to the Maltese political system, particularly on the financing of parties and politicians, met for the first time today, the PN said.

The commission, chaired by Giovanni Bonello, includes former EU commissioner Tonio Borg and Petra Caruana Dingli from civil society.

PN leader Simon Busuttil attended the commission’s first meeting and presented it with the terms of references.

The commission has to make proposals for radical changes to the political system in Malta, particularly regarding the financing of parties and politicians. This should be done after the systems used in countries considered among the most transparent by Transparency International were researched.

The commission members agreed that a public consultation process should be carried out to give everyone the opportunity to share ideas.

The commission proposals will be included as part of the PN’s electoral manifesto for the next election.

Dr Busuttil's falsity coming more into the open - PL

In a statement, the Labour Party said the Opposition leader's falsity was coming more into the open with his attempt to set up the commission in a bid at redemption from the db wages scandal.

In this supposedly independent commission, he appointed Dr Borg who had resisted the introduction of party financing legislation.

If Dr Busuttil wanted to be credible, he should have published the fake donation invoices given to the Nationalist Party using the party's company Medialink as a smokescreen.

This led to a breach of the party financing legislation, which Dr Busuttil's party had strongly resist for many years. It is now becoming more obvious as to why.
