Updated Tuesday 8.11am - Parliamentarians have received an anonymous letter implicating Parliamentary Secretary Justyne Caruana and Magistrate Grazio Mercieca in a case of alleged political interference in a police drugs investigation, Nationalist Party deputy leader Beppe Fenech Adami told parliament.

The case revolves around a statement given to the police by two Gozitan youths during a drug investigation in 2013, which was allegedly changed following a meeting involving “two senior politicians” and family members of the suspects. The government has since launched an inquiry, which the PN says it has no faith in.

Dr Fenech Adami said he was convinced that neither Dr Caruana nor Dr Mercieca were involved, but that this was a part of a frame-up.

In a statement this morning, Dr Caruana again denied any involvement in the case and pointed out that the government has set up an independent inquiry to establish the facts. The process should be allowed to take its course.
