Some 6,400 families are taking advantage of free childcare services, with government investment in the scheme reaching €12 million this year, Education Minister Evarist Bartolo said.

When it was first introduced three years ago, fewer than 2,000 families were enrolled with the scheme.

Mr Bartolo said the government expected the number of families enrolled to keep growing, and noted that the scheme had been praised by the European Commission for its success in encouraging women to enter the workforce.

The minister made the remarks while visiting a childcare centre in Naxxar.
