Sausages, raw chicken, rotten meat and green eggs were among some 180 kg of meat, dairy and poultry products seized from passengers arriving in Malta during the first three months of the year, Customs said in a statement today.

It is illegal to bring these items and any of their by-products into the EU due to their heath risks.

Most of the passengers arrived from non-EU countries and were selected for a personal luggage search after being flagged as suspicious following an x-ray screening.

All seized items were passed on to the Health Department's Border Inspection Post to be destroyed.
