I refer to Joe Portelli’s letter entitled ‘The role of conscience’, (The Sunday Times of Malta, March 12).

Mr Portelli said:  “In this search for truth the person should obviously consult his or her faith, the Church’s teachings, the Bible [the word of God], human experience and other people.”

I could not but bring to mind St Paul’s prayer of thanksgiving to God in his apostolic Letter to the Thessalonians: “And there is another reason why we always give thanks to God. When we brought you God’s word, you heard it and accepted it, not as man’s word but as the word of God, which indeed it is”.
