The police will be benefiting from over €75,000 — of which €56,250 will be financed through the EU Internal Security Fund (ISF) — for the procurement of forensic equipment, Parliamentary Secretary Ian Borg said.

The project includes the purchase of handheld devices to detect and identify different substances and narcotics as well as the provision of related training to personnel.

By means of such equipment, police would be better equipped to combat organised crime and other areas of illegal activities. Malta, Dr Borg said, would be investing around €100 million under the ISF to aid internal security and border controls.

He said more projects were in the pipeline for implementation under this fund, and would be approved later this year. Their main objective was to improve Malta’s security mechanisms. They would complement, and build upon, other actions implemented under previous Funds.
