A monument that will "celebrate the Maltese" who played a role for the people to become a nation will be inaugurated at Valletta's Castille Square on May 12, the government said.

It said in a statement the monument portrayed the Maltese people's long journey to take destiny into its own hands leading to it having the current presidency of the European Council, following long years of foreign rule.

Named Fjamma li ma tmut qatt (A flame that never dies), the name reflects the enthusiasm and continuous work of the Maltese to decide their own future while improving their standard of living.

The bronze monument was designed by Valerio Schembri.

Soon after its arrival in Malta, it was put in its place at Castille Square for the necessary works which need to be done prior to its inauguration.
