Rugby Union: Japan will host Australia at Yokohama’s Nissan stadium, the venue of the 2019 Rugby World Cup final, when the pair face off in the east Asian country for the first time in November. “It’s great that the very first test match for Nissan Stadium is against the Wallabies, who were the runners-up at Rugby World Cup 2015,” Japan coach Jamie Joseph said.“Nissan Stadium is where the Rugby World Cup 2019 final will take place, so I’m sure the players will relish the opportunity to play against one of the best teams in the world.”

Athletics: British Olympic champion Mo Farah is supporting a charity appeal, launched yesterday, for 16 million people facing starvation in East Africa, including Somalia where he was born. The Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC), an alliance of 13 leading British aid agencies, are raising funds for South Sudan, Somalia, Kenya and Ethiopia, which have been hit by drought. “It breaks my heart,” Farah said. “I can’t imagine how awful it would be to watch my children not having food to eat or water to drink, but this is a reality being faced by so many parents in East Africa.”

Commonwealth Games: Manchester has joined Birmingham and Liverpool in making its pitch to replace Durban as the host of the 2022 Commonwealth Games. The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) stripped Durban of the right to stage the Games on Monday, only 18 months after the city was awarded them. Having already expressed an interest in the 2026 event, Birmingham and Liverpool wasted little time in saying they would be delighted to take it on four years early, and now Manchester has said it is interested in reprising its hosting of the 2002 Games.

Basketball, NBA: LeBron James led the Cleveland Cavaliers to a 128-96 win over the Detroit Pistons in the NBA. James fired the 52nd triple-double of his illustrious career, consisting of 16 points, 11 rebounds and 12 assists, while Kyrie Irving top scored with 26 points. Stephen Curry scored a fitting 29 points to mark his 29th birthday, helping the Golden State Warriors to a testing 106-104 win over the Philadelphia 76ers. Curry top scored as the Warriors outscored their opponents 28-14 in the final quarter to end a three-game losing streak.
