George Barnard Shaw’s play Saint Joan is being broadcast live from the Olivier Theatre in London tonight, as part of Spazju Kreattiv’s programme of cultural events.

The show follows the life, choices and trial of a young country girl, Joan, who declares a bloody mission to drive the English away from France.

As one of the first Protestants and nationalists, she threatens the very fabric of the feudal hierarchical society, including the Catholic Church, all over Europe.

She is described as a visionary, patriot, king whisperer, soldier, leader, victor, icon, radical, witch, heretic, saint and martyr.

Gemma Arterton plays the part of Joan. Her portrayal was lauded, with Michael Billington of The Guardian commenting: “She has the right mix of shining purity and grim determination and is very good indeed.”

The play is directed by Josie Rourke (Les Liaisons Dangereuses, The Vote, Coriolanus).

■    Saint Joan is showing live at St James Cavalier at 7.30pm. It is suitable for those aged over 12. An encore performance will be shown on March 30 at 7.30pm. For tickets, call 2122 3200 or log on to www.kreattivita.org.
