An interdisciplinary project by Kristina Borg, also known as Miss K, is looking into the relationship between art and commerce with the aim of questioning consumption patterns. You Are What You Eat analyses how the art sphere is influenced by, and reacts to, the capitalist economy and how the latter influences choices and decisions, hence ultimately how it shapes one’s identity.

The research phase, carried out at Park Towers supermarket in Santa Venera, saw the team members observing the setting as well as conducting interviews with clients and employees to answer such questions as: who does the shopping, how one plans for a shopping trip and what makes one choose a particular brand and not another. A selection of this collected data is presented in an exhibition called You Are What You Buy, currently on at St James Cavalier.

Extracting a number of shopping patterns led to the creation of the final artwork that is presented at the supermarket during its opening hours. This includes a set of paintings, a limited collection of T-shirts and tote bags, and a performance art piece where customers are invited to interact.

This project saw the involvement of anthropologist Virginia Monteforte, dramaturg Jean Marc Cafà and performers Miriam Calleja, Elise Ellul, Sergio Laferla, Yandrick Agius, Norman Cristina and Clara Agius.

This project is supported by the Malta Arts Fund and Spazju Kreattiv.
