The woman behind the wrongful imprisonment of her husband on charges of having abused the couple's daughter today admitted to breaching bail conditions and lost her €5,000 bail bond as a result.

Liza May Camilleri, 47, from Paola, had been granted bail pending criminal proceedings related to perjury after her false testimony in court led to the wrongful imprisonment of her estranged husband.

The man, Emanuel Camilleri, was held behind bars for 400 days before being released upon an application by his lawyer to the Constitutional Court.

The court today, presided by magistrate Claire Stafrace Zammit, after hearing Ms Camilleri plead guilty to breaching bail, condemned her to a jail term of four months suspended for one year.

The court also handed down a fine of €100 and ordered the forfeiture of €5,000 representing the personal guarantee imposed upon the accused by an earlier judgment delivered by another magistrate's court in July 2014.

Inspector James Grech prosecuted.

Lawyer Noel Bartolo was legal aid.
