An explosive package was found at Germany's finance ministry today, with national media reporting that the addressee was German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble.

An investigation is underway.  

The police confirmed that the package contained explosives which would have caused "considerable injuries".

It was found in the mail-sorting room.

A finance ministry spokeswoman declining comment except to say an investigation has begun.

Germany has suffered a series of attacks over the past year. The worst occurred when a lorry ploughed through a crowded Christmas market in Berlin in December, killing 12 people.
