The Island Car Club’s sixth round of racing from the Hillclimb Championship at Ġnejna was full of surprises and emotions.

The weather was windy and dry but dust that gathered from the beach and fields nearby restricted drivers from developing their full potential in the uphill race.

At the end of the day, Keith Camilleri claimed the honours after clocking the fastest lap inside his Fracht Malta Radical Prosport. His timing was 35.497 seconds.

Mark Micallef, in his Avon Tyres Radical Pro Sport, managed a time of 35.933 to win his class in the process and finish second overall behind Camilleri.

Fabio Baldacchino, driving his impressive Tony’s Bar OMS 200M Single Seater, covered the uphill in 36.112 for third place.

At Ġnejna, the fastest front-wheel drive car was the heavily-modified Group 3 Snow White Peugeot 106 steered by Didier Bugeja.

Despite experiencing a few technical problems, Bugeja still clocked an impressive time of 41.01. He won the category for saloons thanks to his performance and placing.

The rear-wheel drive honours on the day went to John Zammit in his Rush Sports and Lifestyle Audi-powered Lotus Elise (41.99) while the fastest four-wheeler was veteran ‘Super’ Teddy (Escort Cosworth).

Other category winners at Ġnejna were Andrea Scicluna (Autocross), Stephen Micallef (Group One Class Two), Godfrey Micallef (Group Two), Charles Cutajar (Group Two Class Three), Renato Farrugia (Group Two Class Four) and Steve Baldacchino (Group Two Class Five).

In a statement, the Island Car Club thanked all helpers, marshals and the authorities concerned for making the uphill race possible.

The seventh round from the championship will be the Ħal Far Factory Sprint on March 31. The event will be held in conjunction with Puttinu Cares and the Malta Maltasport Federation (MMF).
