Reference is being made to the report ‘Minister fears fall-out over delay for promised schools’ (March 11).

The e-mail correspondence mentioned in the report dates back to six months ago. Since that time, the new FTS management has been turning the organisation around. New work practices are in place to ensure that the ambitious projects announced in the budget for this year, as well as other projects, are completed in the shortest possible time. The FTS employees are working hard, on a tight schedule, to complete the projects as per the requirements set by the Ministry for Education and Employment.

Since 2013, the FTS has tripled its work and output. This not only resulted in the completion of more than one school a year, but also in refurbishments and improvements in various schools across Malta and Gozo.

The following is a list of the major projects carried out by the FTS, under the direction of the Ministry for Education and Employment, since March 2013.  The list speaks for itself:

New middle school in Cospicua with an investment of €1.7m; new middle school in Birkirkara (Ta’ Paris), €1.4m; new childcare centre in Gżira; new national sports school in Pembroke, €3m; new middle school in Rabat, €2.5m; new middle school in Naxxar, €2m; new kindergarten block adjacent to the primary school in San Ġwann, €1.1m;

New lecture block at the Gozo sixth form, €1.4m; new middle school in Kirkop, €8m; new senior school in Dingli, €8m; new primary school in Żebbuġ, €800,000; new lecture block and an additional floor to the existing ‘Dun Manuel Attard Young Adults Resource Centre’ for youths with multiple disabilities, €2.2m; new sports complex in Santa Venera, €2m; and extensive refurbishment in various primary schools in Gozo, namely those of Xagħra, Sannat and Xewkija, €1.5m.

The above list does not include numerous other projects carried out at various primary and secondary level schools. These projects include refurbishments and improvements to existing educational and sports facilities, and the construction of new lifts, making schools accessible to persons with disability. The above list does not include major infrastructural works carried out at Mcast.
