George Debono’s article (March 4) contains many truths we all need to respect but is, unfortunately, itself rather ‘lopsided’. He should appreciate that so many pedestrians, cyclists and motorbike riders ignore common sense and the rules of the road that it is amazing that there are not many more accidents.

I suspect that he rarely if ever drives as, if he did, he could then hardly fail to notice that few road users of any sort respect or consider their effect on other road users. I am, for instance, astonished at the way many pedestrians walk on the road, even when there is a perfectly good pavement available, with their backs to the oncoming traffic and often using an electronic device. These people rarely look back to check on their own safety but blithely assume that drivers have nothing to do but avoid them.

It is clear few of them feel they should take personal safety precautions or that they have any idea how much extra stress they put on drivers. They also have no consideration for the way they reduce the useable width of the road.

Similarly, the pedal bike riders who ignore ‘No entry’ signs or the motorbike riders who drive quickly and on either side of other vehicles without adequate manifestation (headlights give other drivers the best chance of appreciating that a bike is approaching at speed) or, seemingly, ‘reading the road ahead’, put great stress on other vehicle drivers.

Surely, we all need to fully respect all other road users and to take far greater responsibility for our own safety. We all have a primary duty to take due care and an additional duty not to make the jobs of others unnecessarily difficult.
